A divine yawp

I met singer-actress Meetu Chilana at the Amu premiere Monday night. Her music video above is a track for Hiding Divya, an indie flick about mental illness by the founder of Desipina. Chilana is a bubbly young’un (’My name means to yell!’), but she croons ‘Lost’ with the gravitas of a folk singer.

This track is stretched over a desi-style melody, but the lyrics are sung in English. It reminds me a bit of Sheila Chandra. I’m ambivalent on the mashup — the hard, aspirated consonants of English don’t lend themselves well to raga-style scales — but I’m rather partial to Chilana’s rendition of the Ella Fitzgerald classic ‘Black Coffee.’ And ‘Blackbird’ reminds me of Punjabi folk mixed with Ry Cooder.

Chilana starred in Seven.11 these last two years. For those keeping score, that’s folk, jazz and pop, plus stage and film. Meanwhile, some weeks I’m just lucky to get to the gym on time.
