A priest and a rabbi walk into a Bar

June sixth:

South Carolina drivers will be the first in the nation to be offered license plates that carry the phrase “I Believe” and a Christian cross over a stained-glass window… A proposal for an “I believe” plate in Florida failed in April. [Link]

Juneteenth:

A group that advocates separation of church and state filed a federal lawsuit Thursday to prevent South Carolina from becoming the first state to create “I Believe” license plates… Washington-based Americans United for Separation of Church and State filed the lawsuit on behalf of two Christian pastors, a humanist pastor and a rabbi in South Carolina, along with the Hindu American Foundation

“As an evangelical Christian, I don’t think civil religion enhances the Christian religion. It compromises it… That’s the fundamental irony. It’s very shallow from a Christian standpoint.” [Link]

“The South Carolina Legislature’s decision to align itself with a single religion — Christianity — runs afoul of the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment to the United States Constitution,” the lawsuit states, and also violates the right of free speech. [Link]

Take it from Vancouver, a city that knows: a little-bitty 3″ cross plate is going to get p4ned next to their t0ta13 1337 REAR WINDSHIELD KHANDA STICKERS. And then what? Neon crescent ground effects? Om-shaped cornrows? Star of David body spray?

It’s a total flout of separation of church and state. I reject the ’state’s rights’ nonsense unless they wish to refuse federal funding altogether. They should just be happy with their WalMart, Jesus, and megachurches.
