Accents in ‘The Namesake’

Tabu in Namesake.jpgThe reviews of The Namesake from the Toronto film fest are rolling out. Kirk Honeycutt from the Hollywood Reporter praises the authenticity of the Bengali accents:

Neither [Tabu nor Irfan Khan] is Bengali, yet both are more than credible with the accent, language and manner of people from that state. [Link]

But Saibal Chatterjee of the HT turns up his nose:

Tabu’s performance is a tad uneven. Particularly grating is her faulty Bengali accent. [Link]

Mmm, yeah, I think I’m gonna go with Chatterjee on this one :)

I completely agree with Chatterjee. I expected tabu to have done her homework more thoroughly. it was indeed grating to hear her switch from generic indian accent to whiny bengali. Irfan had it down pat tho. He’s cool.
