Apu Nightingale

Courtesy of unsure shot

Do you work in medicine? Missed out on being asked to ‘do Apu’ because you’re not working behind a counter slinging Slushees?

Don’t worry, 7-Eleven Inc. is looking out for you. All those Apu cutouts are coming to your hospital so your bratty little patients can make fun of your accent too!

… 7-Eleven decided… to [donate] all Kwik-E-Mart “sets” to Children’s Miracle Network-affiliated hospitals… “We have left it up to the hospitals to use the Kwik-E-Marts where they believe they will do the most good or bring the most joy…” [Link]

Mmm, I love the smell of joy in the morning.

The 8-14 year old South Asian kids in school bear the brunt of these shows. There are so few images of SAs in the mainstream media. It promotes “culture sink” among the kids:
    1. Show SAs (parents esp) as social misfits. [Kids act hip - whatever that is.]
    2. Make fun of their frugality. [Kids spend don’t save.]
    3. Make fun of their educational achievements. [Kids studying turns you into a dork.]

To the mainstream media we’re dweebs. It’s an updated caricature that was formerly used against the Jews. There are so many successful, athletic, academic and wealthy SAs in the US — but that’s not shown on the silver screen. You gotta fight for your rights… go Manish.

I suppose I’m obligated now to comment on all the Apu posts… the strangeness of this to me is the fact that the Simpsons isn’t really a show for children, and I would think that it would be more appropriate to fill the children’s hospital with giant cutouts of Dora the Explorer or whatnot.

When’s the last time you saw a kid wearing a Bart Simpson t-shirt, after all? They’ve all grown up now, and become jaded Gen-Xers. ^__^
