Arabindi poppin’
Lots of recent Bollytracks work in Arabic lyrics. ‘Mayya Mayya‘ from Guru even had Mallika Sherawat cavorting as an Istanbul bellydancer. But what desis do, Arabs do right back. Here are three tracks which borrow in the opposite direction (thanks, Ashvin).
Algerian French singer Khaled feat. British Asian singer Amar, who sang the ethereal ‘Jaan’ on Talvin Singh’s Anokha: ‘El Harbe Wine (Where Will You Go?)’
Lebanese singer Mai Hariri feat. rapper Baba Sehgal (Harjit Singh Sehgal) in ‘Gharam Kefi Kefak’:
Moroccan singer Samira Said feat. Shaan (Shantanu Mukherjee): ‘Har Taraf (Kol El Awgat) (Everywhere)’

There’s a lot of Bollywood “borrowing” from the Middle East! Ya Ali from Gangster was a copy of the Arabic song Ya Ghali (you can find it on YouTube), Boro Boro from Bluffmaster is a Persian song, verbatim, another Samira Said song Sidi Mansour was also copied for a film a few years ago, the Amr Diab song Tamalli Ma3a was copied in half-Hindi half-Arabic as Kaho na Kaho…and those are just a few recent examples.
Um, I just listened to that Mayya Mayya track and that’s most definitely not Arabic. It actually sounds like Hindi with a very weird accent, if you listen closely.
Another Arabic song from a few years ago that used Hindi lyrics and mishmash desi imagery was Hisham Abbas’ Nari Narein.

Yup.
See end of song.
Sounds like a few random arabic words (ishta, walida, habibi) thrown in with largely nonsense lyrics :) Can’t believe Gulzar wrote that.
I’ve always wondered if Mehbooba from Sholay had been inspired by Arabic music - none of my Arab friends thought so, though they all love the song.
…and I see the answer in a post further down - cool!
one things for sure! bollywood is hell lot popular and listened to much more :)
