Bada-bing, bada-BOOM
Andrew Sullivan and his readers sure do get off on terr’rist jokes:
I pointed to the tables one by one and said “Way in the back by the swingset is al Qaeda. Next to them is Hezbollah. Islamic Jihad is playing badminton.” Aziz still laughs about that whenever I see him. [Link]
… three of them were behind the counter having some sort of serious conversation in Arabic… I said, “Dirka! Dirka! Mohammed Jihad!” They all laughed… [Link]
Set aside for a minute that this humor is at the level of a fart joke, like pointing at a native of France and yelling, ‘Pierre! Frenchie! Eiffel Tower!,’ only it’s one which implies criminality. What’s surprising is that Sullivan seems to think this isn’t racist as long as the target is laughing.
There is a serious 1st gen/2nd gen split on this — but try it with a 2nd gen Muslim American. I’d wager most aren’t laughing with you, they’re just being polite. And it emboldens the next 50 casting agents who ask you to try reading again, but with a thicker accent and a turban.

I didnt see the humor. The jokes had no subtlety or anything else noteworthy. I like Andrew but sometimes he can be dense.
He’s gone from being a decent chap and gay-rights advocate to all-round asshole - makes you wonder if there really is something in this.
The first joke is really making fun of the guy who asks, “Who are all these people? I’ve never seen any of them.” It’s one of those “had to be there” jokes.
