Bandra Fair
The Bandra Fair rolled into town last week. Families lined up for hours for mass outside Mt. Mary Church on a hill overlooking the sea. Hawkers sold crucifixes, candles, flowers and snacks.
Every September, the feast of Mount Mary is celebrated on the Sunday following the September 8th … the birthday of Mary… This is a week long celebration known as the Bandra Fair and is visited by thousands of people. [Link]

Down by Bandstand, families sat wishing for a sand beach like Juhu instead of a rocky tidal flat:

Trivial Matters has great photos of the fair.

I did a post with some pictures on the fair here - http://trivialmatters.blogspot.com/2006/09/our-lady-of-mount-mary-revisited.html
Whoo hoo, garlands on crucifixes, love it!
The wax body parts remind me of Rio. We ended up in a candomble shop one day, looking for the blue-and-white bead necklaces for Iemanja, and suddenly found ourselves (blush, blush) looking at all sort of quasi-human bits and bobs.
The best part was at a weekend Mass. I think it was around Easter and the priest was walking up and down the aisles with his little bucket of holy water, but he had what could only be described as a paint brush (as in, the kind you use on your wall), and he dipped it in the bucket and THWAP flicked it in our direction, and it was like being in the splash zone at Sea World, we all got drenched!
