‘Bombay Art Deco’

The Sea-Sand faces Carter Road in Bandra

A desi Floridian has put together a new photo book about the similarities in art deco architecture between Bombay and Miami Beach (via Time Out). Navin Ramani’s Bombay Art Deco: A Visual Journey 1930-1953 (Roli Books) points out that they’re both subtropical, seaside cities which incorporated nautical themes in their art deco architecture.

Ramani also records how Indian builders often used indigenous imagery… instead of classical façade reliefs to leave their imprint on the design. [Link]

… the [Bombay] art deco hotels that still exist [are the] Ritz, Sea Green, Chateau Windsor, West End, Ascot and Astoria. Many of these hotels were built as residences and only converted into hotels later. [Link]

Ramani grew up in Court View, an art deco building on the Oval Maidan, and now conducts architecture tours in Miami.

I think you mean Sun N Sand hotel in Juhu, as Sea Sands is an apartment building at Carter Road in Bandra.

I live in Florida and its amazing to see the similarities between structures in South Florida and Mumbai. Key West for instance has a very Victorian look to it, like the structures you will find near the Fort Area.

i heard somewhere that south beach has the most art deco architecture in one place in the world. apparently, marine drive is second. not sure about the accuracy, though i am sure they are both up there in the list…

Can’ believe you did not add a ref to Rushdie’s Ground Beneath her Feet, when you mention Art Deco in Bombay.
