Bombay Soundsystem

Digweed headlined, but last night belonged to Shiva Soundsystem. The sideroom was a riot of soul (Abida Parveen, Umrao Jaan, Sufi bhangra) pitched over spit-hot drum ‘n bass. A subterranean civilization of gussied-up hipsters erupted spooky-eyed into the light. The Mötorhead tee headbanged by an elf in red shrinkwrap, a giraffe in raver hair ties and go-go boots and a fro struggling valiantly through a headband.

The second-rate vodka slathered over a five-star was oppressive, but a DJ tells me underground barely exists in Bombay because of the moral police.

The Brits do it better.
