Boston tea party

Dado Tea in Harvard Square and Tea Zone in Somerville are two of the innumerable specialty tea shops which dot the Boston area. From fancy shops on Newbury Street to the humble Tea Zone, I’ve never seen a place so obsessed with tea, or with such a density of Indian restaurants. It’s almost as if pairing copious quantities of chai with cheap, midday nap-inducing Indian buffets enables one to put off writing one’s dissertation. Who would’ve guessed?

Elephant Walk in Porter Square serves French-Cambodian with a bas-relief of elephant. Rumors that it’s named after a fraternity hazing ritual are completely untrue.

This does not make sense.. really. let’s do some gnumbers. from what i know, commercial real estate prices run north of $150/sq foot p.a. in harvard square. let’s say they rent a modest little hole of about … 750 sq feet. That’s a rent of over $9K a month, excl tax + utilities. I’d imagine 400 sq ft goes as space for basic food prep, not withstanding that giant elephant i see in the bacground. Saar. how much cha they sell in a day and for how muc? this sound like very shady dhandho… unless they is the offspring of the riche and pappa is bankrolling the affair until puttar gets married to cousin and takes over the family bijhnais.
I know one situation like that. Dissipidated daddy dearest’s big investment in lots of tiny gummy tapioca bubbles.
The elephant is from a pricier restaurant, but for specialty restaurant money laundering, see the case of Rice to Riches.
Before she got married to a trust-hedge-fundie from connecticut, that is.
I love E’phant Walk.
P.S. What’s with the FB linky? Do people really want to do that?
Dunno… trying it.
just completing the math for koofia… assuming ~$700 in utilities and other overheads (?), covering the $10k/mth from tea sales @ $1.5 gross margin per cup is 19 cups/hr (30 days, 12 hrs/day). This may not be so outrageous if you assume 3 parties of 4 per hour and 7 individuals, half of whom stay and can sit in the remaining 350 sq. ft. And, of course, snacks are higher margin so per customer gross margins are likely higher.
Thanks for the Boston links. Fun to take trip down memory lane. Have you tried Cafe Baraka in Central Square? I have had amazing food there a long time ago and would be curious to know if the quality is still the same. Another place you should try is Taco Lupitas @ Elm st near the intersection of Elm & Somerville Ave. Of course i have been out of Boston for over 4 years now but still miss the place.
I have not, but thanks for the recs!
