Canada attacks!

Two secret agents from Vancouver, B.C. slipped into a massive Obama rally in Seattle last week to try and rig the U.S. elections. They wore ‘Canadians for Obama’ t-shirts, but their Canuck cloak of invisibility enabled them to pass unappreciated.

A.J. the earnest desi political geek said that not only is Obama the new JFK, he’s also the new Pierre Trudeau. The new Pierre Trudeau, mofos. Which I guess is a big deal if you’re Canadian. At 3:50:

Seriously, you guys have got to get your own country code. 604 isn’t +91. And what’s the deal with our airport signs — left for international, right for domestic and Canada? If Canada isn’t international, why is flying YYZ so expensive?

um… i hope you do better than pierre trudeau. A fine man but not the best prime minister. He was a conservative’s nightmare. High on charisma and intellect but not very pragmatic. Created harebrained welfare plans and emptied the coffers. Took canada to the cleaners -shudder- I sincerely hope you do better.

Here’s a fluff piece on the Obama and the Hillary types.

Translated to the office, the Hillary types work hard and earn respect but don’t inspire people, while the Obama types fire everyone up with their grand visions but struggle to persuade people they can get the job done.

p.s. your elections are so much more interesting than ours. :-)

    Oops! The fluff piece

    khoofia,

Trudeau was a conservative’s nightmare because conservatives are a nightmare. what are these”harebrained welfare plans” that you speak of? are you saying that the thief Mulroney was a better PM than Trudeau!? ha!! laughable!

PS - the following passage is from trudeau’s eulogy

As a 40-something Canadian today, I simply can’t consider the Trudeau record without pausing for long reflection over the generation of economic decline that began on his watch. For a quarter-century until 1974, successive Canadian governments paid down our war debt, balanced our books and provided economic and social leadership. But, hit by the OPEC oil crisis in 1973-74, the Trudeau governments lurched from policy mistake to policy mistake. Over the next decade, his last in office, the national debt would leap from about $18-billion to $199-billion. Inflation and unemployment would defy the convention of the day and gallop ever upward in tandem. Double-digits became the norm.

This, from the article I linked earlier

Brian Mulroney made three daring bets, the first two being economic. The Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with the United States opened the way to a huge new prosperity, though Mr. Mulroney only won the election on this issue because the NDP split the vote opposed to the FTA. He then broadened and deepened the deal in NAFTA. This was the most important economic move by any government since Mr. Pearson’s time. His second daring bet was the GST, which Canadians still revile. Almost all economists agree it was the best tax change over this period.

Make no mistake. I respect Trudeau’s role in delivering the canadian constitution, the charter of rights and freedoms and the multicultural act. (Perhaps the Americans would be surprised these date to the 80’s given the impact they have had on Canadian society.) These are no mean feats and it required a certain gumption and vision to deliver on these. Canada would not be the country it is today but for his work. That said, I stand by my statement that he screwed the country financially. Mulroney inherited a $40B deficit. Vision is good, but it has to be tempered by a firm hand on the wheel. Perhaps something for the Americans to think about.

And what’s wrong with being conservative :-).

blame it on the numbskulls who made the taxpayers pay through their asses for Pearson. It is the most expensive airport in the world. you’re not alone in complaining about it - and you’re touching a raw nerve here - if it wasnt for torontonians, and the fact that most other canadian cities have lousy connections to US cities, I’d have moved. it’s SO BLEEPING expensive. We ended up paying a billion and change to the LAWYERS because the planning committee screwed up. They wanted to renege and the developers took the city to the cleanres. Also, we’re paying several grand an acre as leasing fee for a lot of the farmland in that neighborhood. it’s a shitty situation and we’re stuck with it.

take the flight to buffalo man (jetblue) and drive on over. or take the train over from nyc - it’s a rocking (literally) experience.

    khoofia,

EVERY link that you provide is from the Globa and Mail newspaper! Do you read anything else?
Yes Trudeau ran up the debt but that was part of Keynesian economics . NOW let’s talk about what Mulroney and the Conservatives did to that debt in the 8 years they were in power. Every year that Mulroney was in power the debt increased. clearly you have no idea of what Mulroney did with that $40 B deficit? The Liberals were no better…In order to pay some of it down social services were slashed and gutted. Something you slimeball conservatives love to do…take money from the poor and give it to the rich.
The FTA and NAFTA only made the the rich wealthier and did nothing for the working class. Working class wages have not increased as much as they have for the rich.
The link you provide for the multicultural act wrong. This act was passed by Mulroney. get your years right. Multiculturalism as an official policy dates back to 1963…not from the 80s!

what’s wrong with being a conservative? EVERYTHING

that was one of the best user generated videos i have seen in a while! the producer managed to interview quite a few people. i think it’s interesting answering the question of why one likes obama. he’s such an untraditional type of politician, in terms of his common sense, values, and sincerity, that is seems obvious that any fan of his must be attracted to those very qualities that make him so unlike the rest. i think the question of why one supports a particular politician is much harder to answer, when the field of candidates looks nearly identical and requires one to merely select the lesser amongst evils.

obama is great because the inspiration he gives us reminds us to identify with the higher self within us all, thereby challenging us to contribute and aspire to something greater. in essence, to raise expectations of ourselves and to remember that we have duties as citizens to not just be passive and complacent.

this effect he has on americans is dramatic, after 8 years of not only feeling ignored as citizens and on our domestic issues by the bush administration, but also after being scorned repeatedly to lower our expectations of our leaders and ourselves, and being penalized for asking questions! how dare bush hijack our democracy like that! has he ever read the first amendment?

also, i would like to point out that i am very impressed that obama would have the foresight and plain humility to step outside to thank, acknowledge and momentarily address the attendees who could not be admitted to the building.

NY path opened for business a few weeks ago. It’s mad popular though, so advanced booking is a necessity. From what I hear, the experience is tres chic.

Thanks for that. Porter Air from NYC->YYZ looks like $300, where $100 are taxes (!) Not bad compared to the other carriers. Are they Canada’s JetBlue or what?
