Taporis of the Caribbean
Here’s an account by a friend of Bombay gangster taporis hanging out in the Caribbean:
Went to a sketchy Indian restaurant in the Caribbean. It looked like someone’s shoddy living room. The cheapest plates. Run by some southies, but full of Bombaywallahs. Clearly the underworld, they were speaking Bombay gutter and discussing importing hooky DVDs. Lots of ‘biru’ and ‘kya tension’ comments. I was mesmerised by it. All the way over in the Caribbean and I get Bombay on my doorstep. Butter chicken was good too.
The low-level criminals were also throwing in bits of Marathi through paan-stained teeth. Paan in the Caribbean! Heaven.
Sacred Games had this to say about dons laying low in tropical climes:
… [Gaitonde] had been in exile for many years- on the Indonesian coast in a gilded yacht, it was rumoured - far but only a phone call away. Which meant that he might as well have been next door… [Excerpt]
When Gaitonde becomes a big don and leaves Mumbai to live on a yacht… he turns into a CEO of crime, mastering computers on his yacht, watching over his empire like a stockbroker watching the market and working on penis-expanding exercises. [Review]
