It’s 3am in the White House. You already know where Amitabh is, and who he’s doin’ it with. Dishoom, don’t fire your artist. It’s brilliant. The writing, on the other hand, needs goosing…

Badmash’s obligatory Amitabh for President campaign rolls into town again now that the nominees are almost settled. But this year they’ve slicked up the artwork, posting it on a site with a gauzy blue heaven background like Obama’s.
[Obama] looks terrible in a turban… This is a serious weakness. Listen to me, America! There are many […]

Aamir Khan is cementing his rep as the Tom Hanks of Hindi cinema, going after mid-market family movies with solid execution and few surprises. What does it say about Taare Zameen Par (Stars on Earth), a tearjerker about a child with dyslexia, that the best thing about it is the animation? In the opening credits, […]

The visual style of Nina’s Sita Sings the Blues is hypnotic in part because of the metronomic regularity of its lines, from the sinusoidal waves to the microchip rain . It reminds me of wide-eyed manga faces, Web comics like Demian 5

Nina Paley’s animated gorgeousity has evolved from the last time I got a look, gaining a puppet voiceover among other changes. Props for finally finishing this painstakingly-animated labor of lusciousness and pain:
[Sita Sings the Blues] is narrated by… shadow puppets… voiced by journalist Aseem Chhabra, consultant Bhavana Nagulapally and Loins of Punjab Presents director Manish […]

Popeye Hates Injuns from turbanhead on Vimeo.
We just finished watching disc one of the Popeye The Sailor DVD. These classic cartoon shorts are simply amazing with their sight gags, technical innovations and lush animation. This stuff blows away garbage like today’s Saturday morning cartoons and everything Hanna-Barbera ever put out in the late […]

More arty Zune stop motion ads are rolling out around the sharing tagline. This one has a stereobot shooting a rainbow raygun set to ‘pimp.’ It plays over a stylish Bitter:Sweet tune, ‘Dirty Laundry,’ with Kiran Shahani on bass.
Great music, but this is by far the strangest BigCo campaign I’ve seen in years.

After a somewhat protracted silence, I have returned from my kingdom of obscurity to ring in the Christmas season with the aid of BoyMongoose (yeah-yeah, Christmas is colonial hegemony, cultural suppression-cum-oppression, etc., but in my world its also the one time of year when one can praise the lord, pass the whisky, kiss your cousin […]

Vis-a-vis Manish’s Cover Hall of Shame post and a reader comment about the dearth of solid, youth-oriented South Asian literature, I’d like to draw your attention to Kahani, a South Asian literary magazine for children and also, the 2006 recipient of the Distinguished Achievement Award from the Association of Educational Publishers and the Multicultural Children’s […]

I regret to inform you that dancing-baby animation seems to have just hit certain parts of India and thus, we have this somewhat lackluster offering from Team Krishna @ Shethia Audio Video Pvt. Ltd.:
‘KRISHNA‘ a richly animated, musical feature film tells the story of Lord Krishna’s birth, his childhood spent in Vrindavan… [link]
And so on and so forth. […]

Experience Devi, the princeps civitatis of Virgin Comics’ new Shakti line:Â
In the second century of mankind’s arrival on earth, the Gods of light took up arms against one of their own. Bala, a fallen dark god, had rejected the old ways of the pantheon and sought to impose his dominion over mankind…
So the pure Gods each sacrificed […]
