Cheesy kum

I need sexy!

The most indelible image in the middling Cheeni Kum (Less Sugar) is Amitabh Bachchan wrapping his arms around the Qutab Minar’s iron pillar, screaming, ‘I need sexy, ma!’ at the uncaring sky. This is what age, and Freud, do to the vain.

Oh no he di’nt

I thought I walked out of this May-December flick when it was called Nishabd (Speechless). Zohra Sehgal is as filthy as I remember her from Masala. Jameel Khan, a chubby-faced gargoyle of wit, is slumming here after his star turn in Loins of Punjab. Tabu is beautiful and adequate, as usual.

At the slightest hint of originality in a Bollyscript, I begin looking for the lift. Spice6 the restaurant is from 5 Spice in Bombay. The rest, voilà: Mostly Martha and A Chef in Love.

Oh ! this looks quite charming. The original looks quite morose by comparison.
I just hope the trailer left out something. I have to say though - that Amitabh Bachan really likes hamming it up. And tabu! Cool, collected, composed, effortless. Oh, what a vision.

But I can see the target market of aging desis sporting saltnpepa goatees, sport jackets, hermes scarfs, infinity pools, and red miatas who are going to lap this up.

I thought it was sweet, cheesy warts and all. The comparison to Nishabd is inapt, unless you don’t perceive a difference between courting an 18-year-old girl and courting a 34-year-old woman, or between drama and comedy.

    Reminds me of Jogger’s Park.

Nothing beats Amitabh Bacchan jumping around New Orleans in a pimp suit. Don’t remember the name of the movie but I think Bobby Deol was in it. I’m sure there’s a trailer around the net somewhere.

I dont even know why they make movies like Nishabd or cheeni kum and why Amitabh choose to act in both..I didnot watch both but heard about the storyline..older men falling for twenty or thirty something women..Tabu is a fine actress, sad to see her act in such movies.Like Anna nicole smith marrying a eighty year old man for what..creepy…

I don’t think in real life it will ever happen…Young girls marry old men just for money. That is universal fact.
In reality ‘Cheeni Kum’ movie is a total non-sense!! And Amitabh should take a break from acting in such non-sense movies. I never want to spend $ and expensive gas to goto Naz cinema to watch such a stupid movie.

A thought flow around two points
    1. The trailer referenced music by Illayaraja.

I saw a movie called Guna a few years back. My knowledge of Tamil is abysmal, and there were no sub-titles. The movie starred Kamalhassan and Roshini and had music by Illayaraaja. It was the music that made the first impression on me. Later on as I learnt the finer details, I realized the art in the moviecraft. This is perhaps the finest counter-point to your second point above I can think of. There is some good stuff out there in regional cinema. Not only was Guna’s screenplay original, the presentation had a Tamil flavor all the way. No trips to Switzerland, spanish guitars, flamenco etc. A large part of the movie is set in a cave (no papier mache walls ) near ooty I believe. I was intrigued by the references to Hindu mythology and the use of the Tamil sax. Anyhow.

Here’s a couple of links - a stellar review of the movie, and the song that haunts me to this day.

Ugh, I hope they washed it off after the shoot.

I don’t know what the big deal is…it doesn’t take any stretch of the imagination to imagine Amitabh with a younger woman…if anything Tabu is probably too old for him but then Amitabh bachan screws anything with legs and a pair of jugs. He’d screw an alligator if you strapped a bra on it. I don’t know how he’s managed to cultivate this dignified patriarchal thing…he’s a horny little boy… if you’ve seen KANK Kabhi Alvida Na Kahena…that’s what he’s like “sexy sam…”

wait a minute rahul…are you telling me the big B hugs a gigantic metal phallus and screams I need sex ma?

I just saw Vanaprastham last week and wanted to recommend it. Another example of an indian movie with a powerful storyline, fabulous acting, great cinematography, and a theme that couldnt be anything but Indian. Here’s a wonderful review.

The movie is the story of kunnikuttan(Mohanlal), a poor kathakali dancer’s search for identity and recognition. He comes across subadhra(suhasini maniratnam), the daughter in law of the travancore diwan. The line between reality and dream blurs for subadhra.Like “Subadhra” of the mahabharath character who falls in love with the mythological character arjun, this subadra falls in love with the arjun of the kathakali play, kunnikuttan. This leads to various complexities and with kunnikuttan’s drastic moves the movie come to a crashing climax.

As with Guna, there is a lift, but from Indian mythology - and the presentation is anything but straightforward or trite. The use of mythology adds a core to each story line. One knows the moviemaker will not go for cheap thrills. The ‘regional’ cinema seems to be the hearty main course to bollyflicks’ foam confections.
