Currylingus recently blogged about an activist with the coolest cross-cultural name this side of Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak and Tristyn-Finn Cherian. The tongue-twisting Leah Lakshmi P-S makes an appearance at the Queens Art Museum (via 3rd I):
Leah Lakshmi Piepzna-Samarasinha is a queer Sri Lankan high femme diva without the drama. Burgher/Tamil Sri Lankan by way of Worcester, Mass, Brooklyn and Toronto, she is the author of Consensual Genocide (TSAR, 2006)…
She’s preceded by a drag show and a a film about being gay in India:
Yours Emotionally! follows Ravi, a gay British-Punjabi and his best mate Paul on their visit to Shimoga, a small town near the Indian metropolis of Bangalore. During his sojourn over a week in this idyllic hill town, he gets a taste of gay life and its nuances there. He finds a mixture of moribund traditions and shocking openness. He cannot reconcile these with the gay scene back home in Leicester…
The entertaining highlight of the evening will be drag performances by the divine Zeena Diwani and the always electrifying Bijli.
Here’s a mixed review of the film:
… three cheers to director Sridhar Rangayan, who [gave us] the delightfully camp Gulabi Aaina [Pink Mirror] (2002), a Hindi-sitcomesque look at Bombay’s filmi queen culture… [Link]

i suppose it is healthy that the south asian community’s being more vocal and gay positive - locally they are screening TV commercials to spread aids awareness among the southasian gay community - also asaap seems to have a strategy in place - last year’s print ads was geared to instil gay pride - this year, they acknowledge that it is unique to the south asian experience to stay connected with the family — check the 2006 campaign with the punch line, “why cant i tell you i have HIV”.
Well this is new! Gay men in India and UK! Saw the film Yours Emotionally- good start direction a bit odd but the story line is fab whoever wrote it deserves an oscar!
Thanks Nitin, the film is written by me (Sridhar Rangayan) and Niranjan Kamatkar, also the producer of the film. Should we take a bow, if not an Oscar!!!
Sridhar :-)
