Coney Island welcomes Maya
M.I.A. brought her sparse sound to Coney Island yesterday at the Village Voice Siren Festival. It plays well indoors but sounded weak on an outdoor stage. The new tracks, ‘Bird Flu’ and ‘Boyz,’ were powerful though. She also rapped over the Bollyclassic ‘Jimmy Aaja‘ from Disco Dancer, saying it’s a song her mom used to play:
She drew a largely white hipster crowd with a smattering of black and desi fans. It’s like Williamsburg emptied out for the evening:

i was there and elated! the crowd was not at all energetic, which sucked!

:)) loving the Tamil folk beats on Bird Flu, and much respect to the “hipster” attempting the dapaankoothu. Ilaiyaraja would be so proud.
