Ebook odyssey

I recently checked out the South Asian fiction titles available for Sony’s new ebook reader. It turns out there’s a competitor with an even nicer screen, the iRex iLiad:

… enough cannot be said about the sheer beauty of the display. We would swear up and down that we were looking at a sheet of laser-printed paper behind a sheet of matte glass — yes, it’s that good. [Link]

But at $820, more than double the price of the Sony, it’s pitched mainly to pilots and others with a business need to lug around scads of reference binders.

Are you thinking what I’m thinking? Bundle the iLiad with wrist-busters like Sacred Games, A Suitable Boy and Red Earth and Pouring Rain

    Sounds good :)

but for the old-fashioned souls like me, the touch and smell of paper and the very joy of walking into a book-store is a big enough reason to stick to paper books. Not to mention, if one has to read a book to the nephwes and nieces at home :)).

though its a good idea when one has to move and also a bit environment friendly.

    Hey Manish,

Are we going to see a Don review from you soon?

I read up about electrophoretic displays (the kind discussed) and realized that it is fundamentally a really sophisticated MagnaDoodle. Cool. May not be ready for prime time though. About 2 sec per page a refresh. Maybe even more. That could get tiring really quick.

Though I love the print on paper, this is great…easy to carry..
I had to throw a lot of books I bought in india as airlines these days reduced the carry on as well as check in luggage limits. Ebook seems to a great alternative and easy to carry while traveling..wish I knew about this earlier..
