Featherbedding
Officially unleashed in America this morning, M.I.A.’s new album Kala is wilder and less even than Arular. She’s got raw, political yet radio-friendly hits in ‘Boyz,’ ‘Bird Flu,’ ‘Jimmy‘ and ‘Paper Planes.’ ‘Mango Pickle Down River’ turns a didgeridoo drone into booty bass. The spare, whispered ‘XR2,’ which samples the Hum Aapke Hain Koun soundtrack, is hypnotic.
But the other half of the disc is what used to be called a B side. It seems to exists purely to stroke music critics with references to the Pixies and New Order. And the lyrics for ‘Come Around‘ are almost as culturally lame as ‘Indian Flute‘:
Maya:
My girls run the Everglades
Indian tribesmen gamble spades
Indian chicks, they get men laid…Mina, Rina, Tina, Sabrina
Being a super Indian babe
We black market, we black made…
Timbaland:
Baby girl
You and me, need to go to your teepee
The moon is full, and I’m shining.
Baby, I know you see me.
Put a hump or two on your back
Just like that…
Today’s the day, girl, let me get that… [Link]

You don’t like Hussel? Or World Town? I dunno. I like much of the album. But maybe I’m more picky ’cause I’m not a desi hipster. ;)
yeah the lyrics on come around are beat… she (or timbaland) gets points for sampling the vocal track from Shamur’s ‘let the music play’
i’m too lazy to post this on your stories thingamajig, but if you haven’t seen it and your in the mood to hear an accent worse than Sellers in The Party check out Rowan Atkinson doing this bit called “Guys After the Game”
it reminds me a lot of the ‘going for an english’ bit from GGM… hahaha
oh and re your sugar sammy post a while back, he used to be (or still is) a promoter/host for local events here in montreal… pretty funny dude, but totall sleaze ball
Sigh. I meant to say *LESS* picky. Bah.
I enjoyed that. I am a huge fan of Atkinson and his comedy - from Black Adder to Mr Bean and to his comic sketches. Much as I enjoyed his work*, my respect for him increased tremendously when he spoke up eloquently and vociferously against the muzzling of speech in the wake of the danish cartoons. He is extremely well-spoken. BTW I think he married desi.
Thanks for sharing.
*I enjoy comedy as much as anyone else but find there to be a singular lack of popular comedy that does not rely too much on gas or expletives and such, hence the likely appeal.
Rowan’s wife Sunetra Sastry.
I have a feeling the name of the album, “Kala” may have as much to do with the hindi/punjabi word as the purported homage to mummy dearest. Pendoo types are downright cruel to non-punjabis and I can see the kid being taunted for being “kala” when young, which might explain the four pix she’s placed on the corners of the album cover. just a theory
Last night’s local news here in L.A predicted this will THE release of the year.
the album i not bad. the lyrics on that one teepee song are basically dumb and make me think timbaland must be a moron.
Overall the album is worth a full listen. there is also one track with these australian aboriginal kids who cant be older than age 9 which is pretty cool
Didnt want to re-post - but MIA’s coming on now in about five-ten minutes. It’s 3:45 now.
Sorry for the diversion. And kid koala is a personal fav and he’s after mia. just a plug for him.
