Fido Dido

As part of a promo for her new album, singer Dido released a desi music vid keyed to ‘Let’s Do The Things We Normally Do.’ It’s a day in the life of a female Bombay cabbie, played by Shahana Goswami from Rock On (thanks, Dari):

An Irani cafe, a stockbroker, a koliwada, a woman shelling peas in the car — this is definitely made by a local, Siddharth Sikand. Consumer multinationals’ TV ads are a training ground for slick Indian filmmakers, and wherever you find a Western production which nails the details, an unsung local assistant director is usually responsible. I’m thinking of everything from Slumdog Millionaire to the ineffable ‘Mulit.’

There are other videos in the series, including one from Bangkok.

And I think the fat dude indicated that he had to “decorate the walls” with his pinky. That’s a slice of life too. Excellent casting choices. Are there female cabbies in Mumbai?

I don’t remember any. It probably isn’t safe for them to sleep in their cabs either. They’re rare in NYC too.

The reason I ask is that in Cairo & Tehran, there are now female cabbies. In the case of Iran to take solo female passengers and in the case of Egypt to avoid harassment. I think there might actually be a business for female cabbies in places like Delhi which are not as woman friendly as Mumbai

    she’s cute.

She is beautiful in a way that I would not have given Bollywood credit for noticing (per Manish she is also in a hit movie)

They are still slotting her into conservative female roles– in Rock On, she’s a shrewish, blue-collar wife, a cabbie in this one.

Cool song and video. Reminds me of “King’s Cross” by The Pet Shop Boys. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jIcdlNvyRVI

I love Dido, although the stream was bumpy for me so I couldn’t tell if I’d like this song or not. I’ll have to listen later.

The video played as almost a bunch of still images for me - very nice still images. For once, computer-y nonsense was kind of interesting. Visual quietness is a nice thing to see……don’t be afraid of quietness, calmness, steadiness, young film-makers, some of us out here like it.

    Okay, got it to work.

    1. Nice music, but not my favorite Dido music.

    2. People in the back of a taxi is not exactly a new concept for a film or video

    HOWEVER

    3. This video actually did something very nice with the concept. People love stories, that’s why we read books, or gossip, or watch film and this video gives tantalizing glimpses, slice-of-life-like, into different lives, and we can make our own stories out of it. Why is the cab driver so wistful? Why is the cab driver watching the older woman drinking tea by herself, and who does the woman remind the cabdriver of, and why does she touch the bangles so longlingly? And so on.

We can come up with a million theories (stories) based on the images presented and that’s what makes this a lovely piece of work.
