Film cest

Neela at Hyphen mag reviews the desi-related flicks at the SFIAAFF. Her picks include this incestuous tease, Kissing Cousins with Samrat Chakrabarty (Loins of Punjab) and Rebecca Hazlewood who sometimes confuses a bikini top with a sari blouse:

The film follows Amir through his daily work as a “relationship termination specialist” - where he basically goes around L.A. and breaks up with people for a living… he runs into his hot British cousin Zara (Rebecca Hazlewood). She ends up coming back down to L.A., on a lark she pretends to be his girlfriend to fit in with his coupled-off friends… it didn’t dive far enough into the “dirty secret fantasy of boinking your cousin” to make it an interesting take like Spanking the Monkey. Like me, Neela’s obsessed with finding the first great flick about the desi American experience:

Amal… [is] based on a short story written by his brother about a rickshaw driver with a heart of gold… But I feel like it’s been done and I want the cutting edge shit… sadly, Kissing Cousins is just not The Great Asian American Film I was looking for…

[In] Pretty to Think So… Hanna (Pia Shah)… is a South Asian woman in a Korean American world… it was great to see a sex scene between a South Asian woman and a Korean man…

… A Son’s Sacrifice… [is] about a half Puerto Rican, half Bangladeshi American who is helping take over his father’s halal business in Queens by Yoni Brook [Ed.: editorial commentary on the sluttiness of the SUNY campus?]… a Malaysian film called Tiffin [is] about a Indian servant girl who works for an older Chinese woman. Check out the festival schedule and films from India. The fest opened yesterday and runs through Mar. 23rd in San Francisco, Berkeley and San Jose, with guests including John Cho from Harold and Kumar.

… who sometimes confuses a bikini top with a sari blouse…

Why can’t a bikini top serve as a sari blouse? Here’s one from Sheetal India. (When I was in India wedding shopping (many years ago), shop-keepers tried to sell me on the concept, so it’s nothing new.)

They’re a little show-y (not that I’m complaining). IRL I’ve only seen them on Bollywood starlets.

sure it can. Its perfect if you’re coming from the beach and going directly to a wedding, or coming from a wedding and heading for the beach. Or maybe you are having a wedding at the beach and just want to be prepared, in which case, 9 yards of fabric wrapped around you isnt going to help you stay afloat.

You may have a point, but pix will say it better than words.

The trailer for any Hazlewood movie should just be a minute and a half of that image. Makes a pretty convincing argument, in my book.

Oooh now this I like the sound of.

Intra Asian sex we need more of this in diaspora movies. I wanna see a brown stud with a Chinese girl set in New York or San Diego or wherever too. HOT!

    That’s not Rebecca Hazlewood.

That’s Sunetra Sarkar, another British Indian actress who has mostly done TV drama. White guy who tagged the photo can’t be blamed, we all look the same to him I suppose. Only natural.

    This is Rebecca Hazlewood.

And I am glad I didn’t look up at that scary set of chompers she’s baring.
