First-ever Ultrabrown meetup (updated)
Next Monday,
I’ll be going to the premiere of my buddy Deepanjana Pal’s movie about Tagore’s muse. Afterwards we’ll do the first-ever Ultrabrown meetup and head to Haveli. Who’s in? (Please buy your ticket today or they could substitute another film.)
‘Today, nobody really talks about Kadambari because of the stigma of an affair between her and Tagore (despite Kadambari’s very comfortable relationship with her husband)… a few of Tagore’s family members managed to see it. There was tension… and that has made me even more inquisitive about how the whole of Bengal will react to the film.’
Chirosakha He is also named Tagore, Dil Se in its Hindi version… [Link]
Calcuttans reacted with caution:
The Tagore-Kadambari liaison is one of the most controversial chapter’s in the bard’s life… watching Tagore-Kadambari ignite on screen is stomach churning, to say the least… When it comes to all things Tagore, it’s best to handle this subject with kid gloves. [Link]
More about the film:
The mystery that surrounds Tagore’s relationship with sister-in-law Kadambari Devi and, more importantly, wife Mrinalini Devi has attracted biographers as well as researchers over the years… Shedding all inhibitions, Dev Sen was probing Tagore’s responsibility for his wife’s untimely death. [Link]
I think what compelled me to finally put aside my research and take up the camera to recreate her was Kadambari herself. Not just as Rabindranath’s muse, but as a sensitive, artistic woman who veiled all her unhappiness and inadequacies with a smile and a suicide… I wanted to tell the world of this woman who ‘loved not wisely but too well.’ [Link]
The movie runs Monday, July 23, 4pm at Cinema Village East, 181 2nd Ave. between 11th and 12th Streets in Manhattan. Buy tickets online.
Update: If you can’t make the film, come by the meetup from 6-8pm at Haveli, 100 2nd Ave. between 5th and 6th Sts.

I’ll go.
and me
yay! =) thank you. you’re allowed to hate it, fall asleep and of course tell me that you loved it. =D but really, thanks for going.
i’ll bring the 8 ball, don’t forget your keys.
dude - I’m out of town else I’d be there. But doesn’t this meetup plan risk proving your theory that there are only 4 readers of ultrabrown? ignorance is blissful they say.
Juice, please don’t stop reading. We’ll be down to three.
would love to meet u Manish sometime…
now its totally bad timing,…busy work week, wrong day monday…and its in NY which is a long way too for right now…
I want to see this– long overdue, want to meet Manish too, if possible.
4pm? That’s just wrong :(
Do you think you can give me an approximate time for the meet-up?
I may not be able to make it back from work in time for the movie at 4 pm, but would love to attend the meet-up after the movie.
You do have more than 4 readers!
damn, i really wanted to make it, but i don’t think i can. i hope there are more in the (near) future!
… and this is where the mania began.
Let’s meet at Haveli at 6 pm, since it’s walking distance from the theater. It’s at 100 2nd Ave. between 5th & 6th. If you can’t make the movie, we should be hanging out at Haveli until 8ish.
Darn - I’m out of town. Hope to someday thank you in person for the hilarious posts and pointers to those hard to find events that ended up being memorable.
