First female Indian president

Meet new Indian president Pratibha Patil, a member of the Congress party and a former lawyer and governor of Rajasthan:

Patil, 72, was voted on Saturday as the 13th president of the country… The new president will be sworn in on July 25. [Link]

The president can… return a parliamentary bill once for reconsideration and in times of crisis, such as a hung parliament, the role is pivotal… [Link]

Luckily, it’s largely a ceremonial position:

We are a spiritual nation, and Pratibha Tai actually converses with spirits… Under Pratibha Tai’s influence, astrology might even be introduced in the IITs… She allegedly protected her brother from murder charges, and mismanaged a cooperative bank she controlled by cancelling loans taken by her relatives. [Link]

Analysts say Ms. Patil has been chosen for her loyalty rather than her talents…. as health minister in Maharashtra in the 1970s [she allegedly] considered “compulsory sterilisation of people suffering from hereditary diseases”. [Link]

It’s enough to make you nostalgic for the missile engineer in a pageboy.
