Garden state
My mom loves digging up an old photo of us during a Bombay sojourn when I was around three. I’m in a knitted fishing hat and knickers pulled up to nosebleed level. She’s slim, stylish and is holding my hand in front of a playhouse like that of the old lady who lived in a shoe.
I had to track this down.
Kamala Nehru Park turns out to be no mystery at all — it’s on Malabar Hill right above Chowpatty Beach:
Across the street are the Hanging Gardens:
Crazed Linux mascot:
Animals with human eyes:
The gardens look like a photography testbed or a manual for a Japanese camera circa the ’70s:
Couples, babies, and couples makin’ babies:
Your government hard at work:
Skyscrapers under construction:
Someone’s penthouse palace nearby:

killed me man. Loved the penguin on speed pic.
:-)
Just lubbly. Love seeing taxpayers money drifting away to the land of nod…
Nice pics — my wife’s family used to live right down the street from that park, in one of the buildings on Ridge Road.
wow, gorgeous pictures.
What a walk down memory lane- my mom also digs up pictures of me in front of that boot!
So where’s the pic of baby Manish???
Took a lot of these same pictures during our trip to Bombay in December. The crazed penguin is actually a trash can!
I love the laterite hue of the mud. Something very organic about it.
I used to live in an apartment building on Ridge Road and vividly remember playing in Kamala Nehru Park in the evenings. The shoe brings back happy memories.
I’m so glad so many people have memories of this park! Andrea, I’ll have to post it from California sometime.
I loved the penguin trash cans so much when I was in Mumbai that I use a picture of one for my blogger i.d. photo. They’re the best.
this pics make me wanna cry. and be 4 yrs-old again, if only so i could play at those gardens once more.
I saw that boot when I went to Bombay!! yay!!good times.
Hey, those are really beautiful pictures. Very nostalgic…..
these odd shaped trash bins are a bad idea. ive also seen SOME OF these in other public spaces LIKE rajbagh in bangaLORE. CANT imagine it being very easy FOR THE waste management folks to pull these out.
on ANOTHer note
surpriSINGLY (for ME) the statE does seem to caRE for public green SPACE. Thinking abouT it Loudly - there’s a cCOefee table book about this alone - Lodhi GardENs (dillI), RoSE Garden (ChanDIGarh), pinJore Gardens (PinJore), vrinDavan gardeNS (MysoRE), RajBagh (BangalORE), Shalimar (J&K). — heck i’M just lucky to hAVE seen thesE :-) — and FOR those dissing the sleePing workKers - if These are the GardEEEEENers , theN afTERnoon is time foR a well-DEServed siesTA. SomE of these Guys get up At 5:30 beFoore the sun to WAter the garDEns by BuckETs if necessarY. of cOurse it is Silly to be working the OutDoors in the AfterNoon sun. in conVErsation wiTh these guys - they ARE verY pASsionate, Very knOwledgeable - anD truly in LoVE with theiR job. SOomehthing to be saID about the IndIan traDition of duTy.
OnAnothER note - thE arBOreal covER in the CiTIes is muCh abuSed - pollution, ranDOm nailed on signs, bunTings, BUT… it seems TO withstand and stand Tumescent and chubBy, ripping its heAD through the ASphalt. I gueSS when it Rains, it poURs like motherfuckers. keeps them nourIShed well.
Thanks Manish for deleting the earlier one..
