Ghee Lightning

This old, old ad for Gold Spot soda looks like it was filmed in the same era as Grease:

Gold Spot was discontinued in India ‘93 but lives on in the name of LA band Goldspot. Lead singer Siddhartha Khosla named the band after the drink, and their cover of ‘Float On‘ was used on The O.C. Listen here.

Singer Siddhartha “Sid” Khosla has a melodious honey-coated, emotive tenor that alone could carry this band, but he is backed by strong, yet understated, intrumentation that will hold up with the O.C. Soundtrack-style fans as well as hipster scrutiny. [Link]

These guys are in the running for group with the most generic influences ever. Is there anyone they don’t sound like, besides Metallica?

For fans of Radiohead, The Smiths, Morrissey, the Cure and Roy Orbison. [Link]

The band has received a lot of attention for its fusion of U2-like rock with the mellow style of other Brit rockers such as Coldplay and The Doves. [Link]

The lead singer has the India music angle (lead singer named Siddhartha) combined with influences including REM, The Smiths, Travis, Radiohead. [Link]

Nearly every blog on the planet, including us, was going nuts over Goldspot back around December 2005… Goldspot are the kind of band that everyone, from hipsters to OC brats, would like. They’re from L.A., they could easily be the next Killers if they wanted, and they’ve got a singer that turns every song, good or not, into something enjoyable. [Link]

Primarily the outlet for bandleader Siddhartha “Sid” Khosla — raised in a Bollywood-music-loving Indian household in New Jersey… and Egyptian-born drummer Ramy Antoun, the band brings a wealth of melodic influences to the table, including the vocal melodies of Bollywood, the guitar-pop austerity of the UK, and the crisp, open tones of the West Coast…

Goldspot plays with a pristine combination of brightness and unadorned charm that would easily slip into the track listing of the Pretty in Pink or Some Kind of Wonderful soundtracks… the Cure is the most common reference made… [Link]

I always thought the geniuses of Penn Masala would blow up big (listen here):

siddhartha was the first music director of penn masala…also the band just got signed a worldwide deal with Mercury/Universal… [Link]

Here’s the music vid for ‘Time Bomb’ as well as live performances (via Sepia).
