Never prouder to be an American

A new outrage from Burma has just leaked: the junta arrested an Indian man suspected of being an opposition activist. They beat him, gave him an enema and shipped him off to a remote prison where he was beaten and sodomized for four months. When they finally realized they got the wrong guy, they released him blindfolded in a remote jungle in Bangladesh, with no money, no food, and a warning to keep his mouth shut. Neocon Bill Kristol was outraged:

Couldn’t we give at least some of Burma’s generals and soldiers reason to doubt the wisdom of slaughtering political opponents? … What about limited military actions, overt or covert, against the regime’s infrastructure — its military headquarters, its intelligence apparatus, its rulers’ lavish palaces? … Have we really done all we can to avert the disaster that is unfolding? [Link]

Funny story, actually — did I say Burma? This is a parable, I meant America. The U.S. admits the CIA mistakenly renditioned a German to Kabul for the sin of being named ‘Khaled.’ And yesterday, our vaunted Supreme Court shot down his request for an apology and compensation.

And what say the guardians of individual rights — Kristol, Instapundit, Drudge, Power Line? No coverage. Crickets.

I’ve always considered intelligence to be a very murky business, especially in regards to gathering intelligence (not the analysis of it, which is a whole another business). There is a lot that happens underneath surface that nobody knows about, and a lot of which is illegal, including the use of torture on this poor man.

Habeas corpus suspension, CIA kidnapping and torturing people, imperial presidency. We are turning into a banana republic.

Sorry for being unclear– it’s a parable for the Khaled el-Masri case.
