Goooool!

Leander Paes and Czech partner Martin Damm have won the U.S. Open in the men’s doubles category.

The sixth seeds defeated the second-seeded pair of Jonas Bjorkman (Sweden) and Max Mirnyi (Belarus) 6-7, 6-4, 6-3.

This is the first US Open men’s doubles title for both Paes and Damm. Leander has been twice runner-up in this event at Flushing Meadows in 1999 and 2004… [Link]

Paes, 33, last registered a grand slam triumph in 2001 at the French Open with Mahesh Bhupathi, with whom he also won the French Open and the Wimbledon in 1999. [Link]

They made just two unforced errors in the entire match…

The sixth seeds [were] both runners-up in the event with different partners in years gone by… It was the second year running that Bjorkman and Mirnyi, seeded two, had lost in the final in New York. [Link]

Congrats! The NYT blogger bemoaned the lack of interest because the doubles final was played during the Andy Roddick match:

I’m not the biggest doubles fan, but playing the men’s doubles final on Armstrong at the same time of the men’s singles semifinal on Ashe seems mean-spirited… “It was kind of sad to be in the men’s doubles final and maybe 150 people are in the stands,” Damm said. [Link]

Damm also played in the mixed doubles final against Martina Navratilova in what she says is the last match of her career. Navratilova’s team won, a nicer exit than Agassi got.

A great win for Leander. He has proven time and again that he is a true champion.
Interestingly enough, this is his first grand slam (mens dbls) title after his split with Mahesh Bhupathi.

At the press conference clip that NDTV keeps showing, Damm says he wants to keep on playing with him, because there are so many Indians all over the world, no matter where the two go, they always have fans in the stands.

It’s truly a shame that the Roddick-Youzhny match distracted from this title match- this year, the Open seemed even more obsessed than usual with making it all about the Americans- Roddick got more attention than Federer, who made history with his win (can you tell I do not care for Roddick?).

    Anyway, go brown!
