Hero Needs Help

Hero needs some helpThe NY Daily News has a front page story on Manhattan cook Amarjit Singh who, after being slashed in the face by a nutjob, went to rescue another victim of the attacker. Singh has not returned to his old job nor his apartment after the attack and uncertainty clouds his future.

Singh is too scared to return to his rental apartment, just blocks from where he was attacked, so he now sleeps on the sofa in a friend’s living room in Queens.

He can’t walk more than half a block without having to rest, he has lost feeling in the left side of his face and can no longer hear out of his left ear, which was nearly cut off.

He suffers flashbacks and nightmares from the attack, and although the New York State Crime Victims Board is paying his medical bills, the boss he spent 22 years working for has visited him just twice since the attack, Singh said.

The restaurant has remained closed, and Singh says he was never offered any compensation. He has not even been told whether he will get his job back if the business reopens.

OMG those comments are so insensitive. I would love to send some money to Mr. Singh to help him back on his feet, but is there some organization that can help him with the trauma? I cannot imagine what he must be going through internally. There must be a gurdawara nearby that can point him towards people willing to help.

baljeet - while some [most penned by one illiterate a hole] of the comments are disgusting, it’s heartening to note that the majority of comments are civil and compassionate.

otoh, i sugegst we write india abroad [popular local desi news paper] and urge them to highlight mr.singh’s plight. i am sure there is one desi store/restaurant owner out there, who would gladly hire the hero.

Why not a fundraiser/meet up, where we 2nd gen X’s can show our elders how to give back, invite the local press (South Asian and non) to highlight the issue, and perhaps raise a few bucks to give to this dear man. Apparently the City of NY doesn’t seem to extend a helping hand to a local hero, when they so pompously celebrated his stance after the attack.

I agree, surely a gurudwara in New York can help him in some way to get back on his feet?

    this is so sad.
let us know the address so that we can send him money and help him. fundraiser or even posting his story online at a site would be good. we can pass this on to friends and everyone can help him rebuild his life.
I hope he gets better soon.

I cant believe in a country where we are insured to death, there is no insurance policy for the restaurant that compensates any victims of crimes commited on the location. If a customer got stabbed, you bet they would have sued the restaurant. How is an emlpoyee any different?

In Kentucky, a stupid ass ignorant 17 year old girl won 5M from McDonalds for being foolish enough to fall for an evil prank where she was asked by the manager to strip and give the manager’s fiance who wasnt even an empployee a blow job because they thought the prank caller was a real cop investigating a theft. And even worse, the manager lady whoi ordered the 17 year old girl to strip and humiliate herself for an hour in front of her and her fiance actually sued McDonalds too despite the fact that she violated McD’s policies and she WON 1 MILLION.

And this cook won’t be able to win money for getting injured on the job other than a measly workers comp?

I agree with kautilya. There was one hate-spewing idiot with a lot of spare time of his hands. But the majority of people who commented were more rational.
Are there any Indian lawyers in NYC who can represent him?

  8. 8lekhni

Represent Mr. Amarjit Singh, I mean.

Pradeep makes a very good point.
