Hillary’s Dubya moment

At tonight’s Dem debate, Hillary Clinton was questioned about Russian president Vladimir Putin’s successor Dmitry Medvedev:

Tim Russert: Do you know his name?

Clinton: [Nonplussed] Med… Med…

Russert: Medvedev.

Clinton: Med-ve-duh-vuh. Whatever.

Dubya in ‘99:

“Can you name the general who is in charge of Pakistan?” Hiller asked, inquiring about Gen. Pervaiz Musharraf, who seized control of the country October 12.

“Wait, wait, is this 50 questions?” asked Bush. [Link]

I think he knows Musharraf’s name now. It’s what he writes on the payee line for the ten-billion-dollar check. Later Hillary said:

… I am thrilled to be running to be the first woman president, which I think would be a sea change in our country and around the world, and would give enormous hope… [Link]

Sea change? Look up the prime ministers and presidents of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Philippines, UK, Israel, Argentina, Portugal, Bolivia, Iceland, Norway, Lithuania, Canada, Poland, Burundi, Rwanda, Turkey, Haiti, Ireland, Guyana, Switzerland, Panama, Latvia…

It’s actually playing catchup.

Hehe,, I doubt obama knew or could pronounce his name either. It definitely sounds very different from how its spelt.. med-vye-dev maybe ??

I doubt obama knew or could pronounce his name either.

Even I almost had it– ‘Medveyev’ was how I misremembered it. It’s kinda scary that the ‘experience’ candidate didn’t know it.

Hey, give Hillary some credit, least she knew! you are less than 1% of the American population that knows, and/or could even pronounce it (and you have an advantage, you speak Hindi so you can practically pronounce anything! hehe). Obama looked relieved that he wasn’t asked. He didn’t need to worry though, he was barely asked anything, Debate to me and others watching with me went like this: Obama, what did you eat for breakfast today and did it make you feel good? Obama answers, “I had a healthy breakfast which I believe all Americans should have, because it’s time that we brought Change. It made me feel great, because I know there are millions of Americans that don’t get a chance to eat breakfast, and I want to be a President that brings breakfast to them.” ; okay, on to Hillary, Hillary, what’s the difference between Dark Matter and Dark Energy, and how do you think you will leverage both to ensure that you as President will bring world peace, solve world hunger and make sure that the folks that just don’t give a darn about bettering their lives through sincere hardwork, get free piggyback rides to their American Dream?

    :-)

It’s Russia, not Pakistan circa ‘99. She should know!

Oh no, Julie. You’re shocking me! Is there a bias in the way the media represents Obama, the angel of hope? Who woulda thunk?

  6. 6git

Hillary: duh duh duh whatever . That’s just great she doesn’t even know the name of the (future) President of Russia how is she going to negotiate with them?

  7. 7manish

It’s terrible how the media has turned on she-who-lost-11-states-in-a-row. The truth has an Obama bias.

  8. 8Rahul

Yeah, she said medvedova, instead of medvedev.

And going by mispronunciations, apparently, Obama is clueless about domestic policy. Oh my god! How is he going to develop a health plan when he can’t pronounce the name of the state where he went to school, and is the only one with a stab at universal health care?

Mr. Obama twice mispronounced Massachusetts (“Massatoosetts”), the state where he went to law school. Later, Tim Russert, a moderator, challenged Mrs. Clinton to name — and pronounce — President Vladimir V. Putin’s chosen successor in Russia.

“Who will it be?” he asked. “Do you know his name?” She managed, gamely, referring to Dmitri A. Medvedev as “um, Med-medvedova, whatever.”

  9. 9manish

Yeah, she said medvedova, instead of medvedev.

No, she didn’t get too far after ‘med…’ The rest was after Russert’s prompting. Watch the clip.

Not having down the name of the Russian president (in 5 days– election is Mar. 2, and Medvedev will probably win) is pretty worrisome, don’tcha think?

Until Massachusetts goes hostile and develops nukes, I’m not going to worry about it :)

All this talk about ‘women president’ bringing about a sea change in the world’s political landscape sounds so stupid. I don’t know why it gets repeated so often in American mainstream media. Other countries have been way too ‘forward’ in this regard.

Yeah, Hillary doesn’t know her facts. When all Obama did was parrot her line on Russia, of course. And of course, Obama doesn’t know his domestic affairs when he says Massatoosetts, despite being the new JFK and all that :)

  12. 12brown_dbd

I’m sure Russia will have a much larger role to play in the next 5 yrs than Massatoosetts :)

I agree. And I really wish Obama had something more to add than just “what she said” :)

  14. 14brown_dbd

Yes, I agree with “what you said”. :)

Obama is sooo polite…. Hillary is much more confident. She didn’t hesitate to talk over Obama or the moderators.
She’s willing to battle to the bitter end, and it showed.

Russet called Hillary on the Medvedev issue… she tried to hide that she didn’t know his name. She got only as far as Med… before he helped her out. Russet pointed out later he threw the Russian question out there to both and Hillary chose to speak first. He also nailed her on Nafta and income taxes.

Russet is great. He digs until he gets a complete answer, not an evasive half-answer. I met him once at MS-NBC — big tall intimidating man who demands a set (even technical aspects) meet his standards. Russet is one of the greats of American journalism… if only he would get rid of the portable white-board with chicken scratch for writing during elections!

  16. 16Darth Paul

The -ova suffix in Russian means “daughter of”…so it seems that if she had a clue, she might’ve been trying to pull a joke. Instead, she just looks like an r-tard.

We can’t expect all politicians to be linguists, but they should at least try to appear informed.

VV, ‘russet‘ is a big potato. Russert is too :)

Now everyone knows my vegetable :)

On Meet the Press it’s an amusing contrast (actually role reversal). The guests try their
best to play Miss Congeniality while the host barrels down on them… choking the answers out.

  19. 19El SD

Was going to make the same point Darth made about “Medvedova.” And I actually didn’t notice the “massatoosetts’ bit at all.

  20. 20manish

Maybe she was trying to call the president of Russia a girly-man. And since she’s female, maybe it’s a compliment. I’m sure Mark Penn is spinning it right now :)

  21. 21golfastrian

Wow, her experience has led her to believe that preemptively insulting the president of Russia, no matter what sort of puppet he is, is acceptable behavior?

How is this even considered a race anymore?

  22. 22sloppyjoe

at least she didn’t tack on a doesn’t he own a samovar shop in peoria ? to “Med-ve-duh-vuh. Whatever.”

  23. 23El SD

This post was just quoted (and credited) on CNN! Or am I too late to the party?

    Kudos.

  24. 24RC

El SD beat me to it. Ultrabrown featured on CNN … briefly.

  25. 25manish

Hey, thanks. Which part did they quote?

  26. 26RC

Well, they showed the title of your post “Hillary’s Dubya Moment” (it showed the title of the post and some part of the picture)as a part of a story they ran about the incident when Hillary tripped all over that russian name. Unfortunately they did not mention Ultrabrown by name (as far as I know)

  27. 27shlok

Little link of Hillary’s Dubya moment at the debate, if you haven’t seen it. (Note: not the Wolf Blitzer deal that y’all are looking for.)

    ONCE AGAIN MANISH.
cnn doesnt like pimping the name of your site (see apu saga)

    once again.

  29. 29manish

Don’t they do that with most external sites though? The MSM is famous for this.
