Hips do lie
Shakira, our favorite Lebanese mashup this side of Salma Hayek, got Farah Khan to Bollify her ‘Hips Don’t Lie’ performance at the Video Music Awards last week. Sadly, I’ve never seen abs like that in kathak.
So in this one performance, she’s mixing in Spanish, hip-hop, Arabic music and Indian classical dance with the guy who’s in love with a stripper, yo. The mashup is cool, but the Indian elements on American TV are incredibly clichéd. The Dhoom 2 trailer throws Aishwarya Rai into a classic salsa move, but it’s not a tourist move, it’s not the cheesy dance equivalent of Eiffel Tower/Big Ben/Taj Mahal. The multi-armed goddess move here is the Robot of Indian classical dance.
Most of the news coverage called her outfit a sari. This spandex simulacrum of a lehenga is to a sari what a thong is to a parachute. Not that I’m complaining.

That’s one song you have to see in the theater. This postage stamp doesn’t get even close to the multihued spectacular of Omkara on silver screen.

Bharatnatym stage mothers the world over are stumped over what secrets Shakira’s stylist used to keep her head jewelery in place for the duration of the performance.
Double-sided tape?
I’ve used the eyelash glue to keep a matha-tikka in place, and velcro for head jewelry. But they don’t teach that in classical dance, only in bastard Bollywood ;)
I myself always preferred sticky tack.

She’s trying. I hate any criticisms of such a wonderful girl. She is awesome. Okay, so she has flaws (she clearly had no idea what was happening when she embarked on this endeavor). Ask for her apology and cut her some slack. She’s still so loved. By me, anyway.
