‘I for India’
Optimistic young doctor Yash Pal Suri emigrated from India to England in 1965, where shoddy phone lines and the tedium of letter writing inspired him to purchase Super-8 cameras… for staying in touch with the fam back home…. the director smartly grounds the story with historical context by interspersing timely, increasingly hostile BBC TV clips about the growing Indian populace. i can’t wait to see this movie! i don’t know when i’ll get to see it, but i’m looking forward to it. these pics remind me of the classic film ‘To Sir, With Love’. the film has one desi student and one student of african descent in the class; and the teacher of course is also of african descent. the film definitely highlights some of the racial tensions and plain akwardness during this time period in london. but i won’t discuss in detail in case any one here hasn’t watched it yet (check it out, perfect holiday film!)
That second shot is so East is East.
I thought the one in the hood was very EiE.
It’s interesting how there are very few South Indian professionals from that time period who opted for UK. Everyone that I know who went “phoren”, not including Singapore/Malaysia, in the early 60s came to the US.
Of course it’s hard to compare, but I do think things were tougher for Indian professionals in UK compared to the US. US viewed everything as white/black, in UK the working class may have had direct experience with Indians as subservient social inferiors if they had served in the Raj
The third shot is my favorite, speaking of “east is east”.
Whoops, I meant the fourth shot.
where is this movie playing?
Screenings are very limited.
