India Jones

The swashbuckling hero of the movie which scarred desi kids with monkey brains and Thuggees is actually named after India, via Columbus, Native Americans and the Hoosier state:

The state’s name means “Land of the Indians”, or simply “Indian Land”. The name dates back to at least 1800, when Indiana Territory was created, at which time the territory was unceded Indian land. [Link]

Dr. Henry “Indiana” Walton Jones, Jr., Ph.D., is a fictional professor of archaeology, adventurer… notable for his trademark bullwhip, fedora, leather jacket, and fear of snakes. [Link]

… ‘Indiana’ was the name of George Lucas’ dog… In early versions of the script the main character was named Indiana Smith, a play on Steve McQueens character Nevada Smith. [Link - thanks, Rahul]

So Indianapolis = city of the land of Indians. Fear of snakes? A fine Indian he’d make.

Or in the words of John Turturro in Quiz Show, “They’re only called Indians because some white guy got lost.”
