It all comes down to Macacagate
Democrat Jon Tester has just officially won the Montana Senate race with an apparently recount-proof margin of 4,000 votes. You’ll recall that the losing incumbent Conrad Burns is the charming fellow who called Arabs ‘ragheads’ and tried to link cabbies with terrorism.
Now control of the Senate comes down to Virginia’s expected recount, where no recount has ever overturned a lead the size of Jim Webb’s.
Here’s what George Allen’s Aug. 11 slur against a desi did to the Zogby numbers in Virginia:

Now the decision to send the brown-skinned S.R. Sidharth to track an avowedly racist pol is looking like political genius.
And all for want of a horseshoe nail.
… everything changed Aug. 11, when Allen mocked the Indian American Webb volunteer, who was shooting video of Allen at a campaign stop in Breaks, Va., a rural town near the Kentucky border. [Link]
YouTube swings the war. Those are the Breaks.

Not sure how large ultrabrown’s voting readership is but the number of anti-macaca posts certainly did its part to swing the war. nice work.
I usually don’t follow US politics that closely (apart from the election results and discussions on key issues). Thanks to Manish (and Ultrabrown, SM), I was fully immeresed in the Goerge “Macaca” Allen’s re-election bid to the senate.
Nice coverage.
Ultrabrown (and SM) did a great job in highlighting this issue and we should thank them for the same.
its upto us how we choose to deal with insults like this (or the FM 99 stuff last year). if its Siddharth today it can be someone else tomorrow. sometimes people may just brush these things off saying “just get over it and stop making a mountain out of a molehill”. but Macacagate (and the vote swing subsequently) shows that its all worth the effort to speak out.
Juice, it doesn’t matter how large the voting readership here is. even if you can’t vote, you can share information with those who do. i got the macacagate clip (that was posted here as well) from few other friends too, some of them being non-desi. and hold me gulity of mailing the clip to many friends who vote. and most would agree the it wouldn’t have been the same without that clip.
as a child succintly put it “no one can stop the Vaanar-sena” :).
