Just do it… with a Cablinasian

A new study of racial preferences in dating (full text) co-authored by Sheena Iyengar of Columbia reveals some interesting patterns:

• Familiarity breeds contempt: The more members of a particular minority there are in your home town, the less likely you are to date them. And the more blacks in your neighborhood, the more prejudiced you are. Fremont and Edison, take heed.
• Black women and Asians are perceived as the least attractive, including by Asians themselves
• The group least willing to date out of its race, and the pickiest group in general, is white women
• Racial solidarity: If there are only one black woman and man at a speed-dating event, the woman’s affinity for the man rises; the effect vanishes if there are two black men

• The highest affinity is by black women for black men — it’s off the charts — probably because the ratio of professional black women to men is so skewed
• No yellow fever: The reason there are so many white male-Asian female couple is that Asian women have a nearly equal preference for Asian and white men, and there are just lots of white men out there

Others are more banal:

• Men will date anyone hot, while women prefer to date those of the same race. So most men can date prettier women within their race than out of it.
• Men will date women up to their own level of intelligence and ambition, while women are happy to date up
• The hotter you are, the more willing you are to out-date
• Conversely, the older you are, the more you out-date
• If you’re from the South, or the more racist your home state, the less you out-date

The study relies on data from New York speed dating events to get at revealed, rather than stated, preferences (via Reddit). It does not, however, break out desis separately. Here’s the key chart:
