Loose leaf tea

The Darjeeling Limited trailer played before screenings of Sunshine and Once last night. The film is shot in yellow filter, and the costume design references Westerners seeking enlightenment in the ’60s. Most of the trailer is dialogue between the three male leads. Turbaned Sikhs populate the background of the movie, which in addition to the eponymous train is filmed on a bus and a rick.

At first blush, the dialogue didn’t seem as funny as Wes Anderson’s usual. The infamous scene from the leaked script survived: one of the men makes out with a female train attendant, played by British actress Amara Karan in enough blue eyeshadow to make Edna Turnblad weep.

Danny Boyle’s Sunshine is 28 Days Later on a spaceship. It’s so science-stupid, it’s like NASA meets 90210. The ship has artificial gravity, but it’s never explained how (the compartments don’t rotate). The villain is filmed like Freddie Krueger in split-screen and vaseline. I don’t begrudge you girls and boys your man-candy, but Cillian Murphy and Chris Evans as astronauts is about as plausible as nuclear scientist Christmas Jones. It’s the kind of movie where you can tell who will survive the longest based on how pretty they are.

… Chris Evans (the Human Torch in The Fantastic Four) plays the second in command, an actor so excitable and immature that I wouldn’t trust him to drive the 38 Geary [bus route]. Nor would I trust Rose Byrne to run the grill at a sorority barbecue, and yet at one point she seems to be controlling the ship…

Hmm, a chief physicist… it’s Cillian Murphy, a smoldering 30-year-old actor with the kind of penetrating blue eyes that might arrest your attention as you flip through the underwear advertisements. Nothing against the actor, but the casting is comical…

Eventually, a villain is introduced, but we never get a good look at him, except to know that he seems to be skinless and that he talks with an English accent… He wants to kill everyone onboard. Perhaps the audience creates him out of its own collective will. [Link]

Oh, I *hated* Sunshine. Hated, hated, hated. Existential angst goes inexplicable sci-fi horror. Definitely one of my least fave movies.
