True romance

Check out two very funny Indian TV ads about marriage (via Brown Guy). This one’s a Click-like fantasy about picking an arranged mate:

This one explains how to keep your South Indian husband happy. Gender roles in most Indian ads are just like those in Latino ads in the U.S., strictly traditional. They could push the envelope here, though not to KANK levels (the eye-searing image of Rani Mukherjee in bondage gear):

Um, you do mean Rani Mukherjee in bondage gear.

And as a tambram, I do find the tamilian-speaking-hindi accent annoying!

Thanks, I’ve repressed my memories of that movie.

I once had an electrician with that accent whom I could not understand. I just smile and nodded at everything he said. Some day I’ll have a major electrical fire.

There’s no doubt Indian ads are some of the best in the world.

From a Western perspective what makes them different is that they are predominately visual - more often than not there is little text or spoken words. This is to allow the ads to work across all the different cultures/langauges/education levels within India.
