Manhattan? Isn’t that by Goregaon?
Photographer Nisha Sondhe is putting together an absolutely brilliant collection called Bombay v. New York. She rhymes the dhobi ghat with a laundromat, koli folk with a Chelsea fish market, Juhu Beach with the Coney Island Mermaid Parade, a farmer’s market with a sabzi mandi and so on. Others including Suketu Mehta see these as sister cities for peninsular geography, verticality, immigrants, bustle and grime; I see similarities in the cities’ efficient train systems.
You can check out the project at her MySpace page (faster to browse) or her official site (no login required). Here’s a sample:

I love it! But does she have a NYC equivalent of the koli women who dry their shrimp near jogger’s park in the daytime?? That was not a pleasant walk! :D
Agree with you on the trains, for sure!
Love this. That’s for pointing us to it.
That farmer’s market vs. sabzi mandi is the best shot on her Web site. Genius project. But although Bombay and NYC gets compared a lot, I can name a few more U.S. cities that could compare just as well in this format.
Do tell… love this stuff.
I love the concept! Thanks for posting about this.
Love it. Thanks for posting :)
(And on a completely unrelated sidenote, can I just tell you how much I appreciate that you don’t italicize the non-English?)
