MMM in YYZ

Toronto’s Masala Mehndi Masti arts fest is going strong this weekend, and plenty of desi artists (including my friend and children’s author Pooja Makhijani) are on stage this year. If you’ve been through the pavilions, give us a little love and tell us what’s good this year — besides the parties, you lucky bastards.

In case vous are interested, please take a gander over for some pix.

The festival featured mehndi, masala and loads of masti. Unfortunately, since the Summer of 2007 comes but once in a guy’s lifetime, there is but only a couple of hours featured - but I hope the essence comes across.

    Just FYI - here’s a post on a TSAR session at M!M!M!

The discussion was seeded with a question on why South Asian writers in Canada choose to write of the old land, as opposed to where they live now. The response was varying. Nalini felt her current writing is set in Quebec and thus reflecting of her new home - essentially punting the question ot Kwai-yun and Anand. Kwai-yun and Anand were more philosophical, and spoke of the need to tell the human story regardless of the setting and of their need to write about what they were most comfortable in. The last question in the discussion was about how the authors’ respective mother tongues influenced their writings.

Thanks for the posts tb. CBC reports

The number of Americans admitted to Canada last year reached a 30-year high

And now we know why ;)

MMM was quite fun. It was the first time I had made it to TO for the event and was really impressed with the scope of the festival and the turnout. I caught a number of performances on the main stage (including singer/songwriter S.W. Storm and Sampradaya Dance Creations) and watched little ones dance to “Khake Paan” from SRK’s Don at the Artist Café Stage.

Despite the fact that I was scheduled opposite “A Conversation with Rahul Bose,” I read from Mama’s Saris to a very enthusiastic and attentive audience of children, parents and educators. My only complaint: the Writer’s Café Stage was in a huge warehouse-like space and the acoustics were terrible–not very conducive to a reading/workshop of any kind.

The food from Brar Sweets and Restaurant –a vegetarian restaurant in Brampton, Ontario–was yum.

    Thanks for the shoutout, Manish.

Hah! I thought I had flubbed the posting myself when I saw it gone. Thanks for letting me know.

Since you’re contemplating a visit to the new desh (I like the sound of that) I was going to present some more offerings to stimulate you. This Summer has been especially rich for Toronto - with the new ROM extension, the new opera house, the BAPS mandir, the upcoming ‘massive change’ at the AGO. Speaking of the AGO, I had some planning challenges but expect to go check out the ‘Hungry God’ exhibit soon… works by contemporary artists from India. If you’re in the mood for some chutney, we will have some of that at the Caribana paradethis weekend. I am very excited about this year’s Nuit Blanche. For the 2006 edition I stepped out for a quick look at about 9 and didnt get back till 7 the next morning. The amazing thing is the youthful buzz. This place is alive man. You got to come on over some time. We dont do a good job advertising ourselves but we’re having a kickin’ time this year.

Sticking to the desi theme, the M!M!M! was even more slick than I remember from the past couple of years. Last year’s finale was the UK group that did the music for a movie called Bluffmaster. This year it was the Sikk! sounds of The Bilz + Kashif who ended the show with a 2 step bhangra. Friday night at the MMM was Besharam nite with DJ Amita spinning the tunes. All in all the cool thing is the totally laidback atmosphere. Everyone is somebody.

This is the place to be folks. Be here, and give me a holler when you are.
