ok that’s nice and all but

    where the mangos at?

  2. 2Manish's Brother

Send me some of that saffrom pistacho cardamom soy milk. NOW!

  3. 3Saheli

I totally want that green means go thing here. We should make it happen!

That saffron milk sounds yum. But methinks almond or cashew butter would go better with the mango spread. My latest sin–toast almond butter, blackberry jam, and hazelnut chocolate spread.

Today - I REALLY miss Bombay. Sigh.

Truly yummy stuff. I noticed all the new stuff during my visit in December too. But pray, why the prices in dollars when you paid in rupees? :)

..oh I miss the good old days in Bombay :(

paner kebabs and bhuttas (NEVER, EVER!! call them corn… that’s sacrilege!!) … and I was tickled to see that watermelon mint juice… it must be an indian thang…i make it at home - put watermelon with squeezed lemon juice and mint !!! … and blend… and strain…. it is to die for on muggy summer evenings… I’m really leery of the roadside juices but i’ve had some made with bisleri water - and they add this “rock salt” stuff in it that gives it a lot of zip… O MAN!!! I’m going and getting me a watermelon right NOW.

I would consider becoming vegetarian if I lived in Bombay. This stuff is making my mouth water, Bombay is like a veggie gastronomical paradise.

  12. 12brown_fob

Its called “Basket Chat”..available only in the city of nawabs - Lucknow.
It is a speciality of Royal Cafe at Hazratganj, Lucknow.
Yes, the “yellow bowl” is also consumable…that is what makes it unique.

  13. 13manish

Wow, like soup in a bowl.

  14. 14hairy d

Thanks brown_fob… that’s it… i knew in taste at least … i swung with the royals … off to lucknow we go (I wonder how long before they change that name)… speaking of names, … Basket Chat… :-) … they come up with the best names these roadside vendors… have you had a “disco papeetha” in delhi… that is chat made with those baby papayas that are deep orange-red in color… highly recommended.

you are making me HUNGRY… lychee juice…paneer kabobs… my veggie lips are craving some of that stuff..

  16. 16Sonia

You have this meat-eater drooling =)

I’m so jealous, I moved to the Caribbean a couple of months ago and there is no Indian food to be had. Then there are those that seem to be swimming in sweet things with saffron and elaichi. So this soy milk stuff, I never tried soy milk in the states no matter how much the starbucks lady tried to sell me on it. Unfortunately, it seems to be big here. Soy milk or powdered milk. So what does soy milk taste like?

  18. 18Sapna

Barbados and Trini have Indian restaurants… island hop a little.

  19. 19prakruti

    cool stuff..
I tried watermelon juice , guava and leechi juice in india..great..u get leechi and guava juice in indian groceries store in US too now….
Indian corn with nimbu is great on beaches…
I tried caju draksha and cheeku ice creams and faluda kulfis etc., u get now a days in indian grocery stores they are great..
spicy paneer pizza’s u get in pizza huts in india are great.
I remember trying burgers and a couple of interesting stuffedspicy paneer stuff in McDonalds in hyderabad…yummy..
now a days u get ready made unfrozen mango daals and bhindi masalas etc.,u get in indian stores in US now which can be stored at room temp for any number of days ..all u need is to open packs and heat them and eat..
u even get dry powders of paneer masala, rajma, sabjis which u can make fresh by adding just water and microwave..
me and a friend of mine were thinking these days cooking is made so easy with everything ready made and microwavable ..thanks to all indian companies…

  20. 20brown_fob

prakruti - We do get everything in packets..but it doesn’t taste like the real stuff :(
Panner Pizza, Mc AlooTikki burger …yummy

  21. 21hairy_d

prakruti… dont take this personal, but i looked over some of those dishes in the store and havent been impressed… too loaded with ghee and butter etc… i look at the nutrition stuff on the side and a 1/2 serving is like 45g of saturated fat… and it isnt like one really needs to dip the whole eggplant in ghee to get it right… they’re going down a beaten path here, will probably awaken some 5-10 yrs down ok i sound rather pompous but there’s a reason … made a fantastic meal tonight with red dal, grilled asparagus, eggplant bharta, toasted pita and peaches in yoghurt. :-) less than 2 tbsp oil in all and i got leftover. So excuse me while i pat my back.

  22. 22prakruti

hairyd, glad u reminded me of the fat calories..I checked on the nutritional contents of mango, gongura and palak dal(ready made dal) I bought it at indian grocery store in US, its from this company “Priya”of the famous priya pickles. The total fat content per serving is just 6-10grams. I never tried ready made egg plant bharta..
but u know nothing beats fresh home cooked food with less oil and made from fresh vegetables, I prefer fresh food as compared to these ready made ones but sometimes if I have guests coming home suddenly or Iam too tired to cook, these ready made ones help.

  23. 23brown_fob

    How abt some fruit chat.

  24. 24hairy_d

Hey brown_Fob? IT’s time to DISCO! papeetha.
I notice.. the dhoop blob in the middle…
do you know if it’s to ward off bugs or to impart an aroma.
    Cool photo. Thankx.

  25. 25brown_fob

there are some “dhoop battis” which are sold as mosquito repellent too…but the main use is still for its aroma.
you’ll see a lot of “ganna juice” (sugarcane juice) stalls with similar “dhoop battis”.

  26. 26brown_fob
