Run hard, away from Dewey

Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story plays like the stretched-out SNL skit that it is. The humor is broad and obvious. Repetition passes for humor. There are only a couple of inspired bits. You need to have seen the original to get the jokes. And a roster of undermotivated SNL hangers-on are clearly wondering whether there’s still time to go back and get that medical degree.

Tim Meadows does get one very funny public service announcement about the benefits of smoking pot. And the movie’s parody of the Beatles in Rishikesh is fab. It’s Jack Black in a raw silk kurta, tussling with Paul Rudd in a cream sherwani over leadership of the Beatles. After his stint in the ashram, John C. Reilly comes back transformed into a world musician, screaming maniacally for more of M.I.A.’s fave. Didgeridoo is the new cowbell.

Soundtrack ustad Manish Raval done good. The classics wave at you through their parodies, and the title track is almost as catchy as ‘Walk the Line.’ Young Kshitij Pendurkar plays Dewey Rahim, one of John C. Reilly’s many illegitimate kids. His parents must hate him for dubbing him ‘Kshitij’ in America.

SNL jumped the shark so long ago, admitting it jumped the shark has jumped the shark. Today that crown belongs to the Daily Show, Judd Apatow and their own bastard offspring. Three months ago, someone coined the word ‘Apatovian.’
