Space invaders over the Ganga

Check out Our Delhi Struggle by a Brooklyn couple working at an MNC in South Delhi. The title is a play on ‘daily,’ not just a snarky reminder of heat and dust. They snapped guerrilla 8-bit video game art affixed to the walls of Varanasi:

These imagers were placed here by an artist called Invader. He roams the world creating exactly these kind of installations… [Link]

Laddoos with charas centers during Holi:

“No, Dave,” said the coworker, grinning far too broadly to be trusted. “Eat the treat in the middle!”… [Link]

Real yoga in Varanasi:

The pictures below don’t do justice to the serpentine way he moved, the precision with which his limbs unfurled and extended, the total control and mastery he had over his body that made me ashamed of my slouch, my chicken legs, my raspy breathing, the way my arms flap, the way my feet point out when I walk, and all the hours I’ve spent whiling my life away when I could have been trying to master my earthly vessel. [Link]

Pushing a stuck car:

… this car had run out of gas. And the guy on the motorcycle was pushing them to a gas station. With his foot. With his wife and suckling baby on the back of the bike. [Link]

The nature of poverty:

After eleven PM, though, when the iron gate clangs shut and the temperature marches downward, the nighttime guard retreats to a three-sided wooden shelter to doze and shiver until a car honks at him. Then he gets up and opens the gate.

A simple electric motion detector could do the exact same task; but in India, it’s cheaper to hire a man than to buy a machine… This is what poverty forces you to do: endure physical suffering or abject boredom because you don’t have any other choice. [Link]

Their writing style is spare, but their cultural observations are often true. Read more.

After mummy/daddy pay for Invader’s MFA he roams about defacing public property. I hope they cane his butt in Singapore

He’s just plastering bills, it isn’t defacement.

I see, but I still hope he gets caned. The thought that people with no real occupation can afford to travel around India makes my blood boil. This is why artsy types are against WTO/globalization, it ensures they have cheap places to travel to.

So….2 privileged white folks decide to stay in India and talk about
    -how dirty it is
    -child labor
    -cattle on the street
    -child brides

All in the first 2 pages! How stereotypical and orientalist. It’s not that South Asia does not have those things, it’s just that the effect of White people talking about India like brown people is a national geographic special gets on my nerves.
