‘The President’ in New York

Actress Sarita Choudhury and the side-splitting Debargo Sanyal will perform staged reading of my buddy Anuvab Pal’s new comedy in Manhattan on Monday, President’s Day. There will be wine and samosas afterward. The President Is Coming is probably Anuvab’s most light-hearted play to date. Debargo has marvelous comic timing. Do check it out:

The President Is Coming
by Anuvab Pal

directed by Geeta Citygirl

The truth: President Bush visited India in 2006. One of his main goals was to meet the young faces responsible for shaping “the new India.”

The play: A day in the life of six ambitious young Indians who will stop at nothing to win a handshake with Bush, because The President Is Coming.

Cast: Shalin Agrawal, Chriselle Almeida, Diksha Basu, Rajesh Bose, Sarita Choudhury, Nina Mehta, Nitika Nadgar, Debargo Sanyal, Atul Singh, Amol Tripathi

The play premiered at the Writer’s Bloc festival in Bombay and was picked up for a commercial run in Bombay. Dates so far include March 11 and 24 and April 7 and 8.

The President Is Coming reading, Monday, Feb. 19, 7 pm; Salaam Theatre, 16 W. 32nd St. between 5th Ave. & Broadway, 10th floor; donations accepted

such an interesting fun topic to write a play on..Anuvab must be very creative..wish they play it in US in every city or make a movie out of it..
I remember farmers in ICRISAT Hyderabad presenting the President Bush with a huge melon..I read somewhere that most young indians felt like he could be their beer buddy. The way village women welcomed Clinton too with total admiration in their eyes..it was fun to watch

sounds exciting. debargo sanyal was brilliant in the play “port authority throw down” http://theworkingtheater.org/patd.html and also in the 7-11 plays. and i think sarita choudhury is just plain beautiful! and she was funny in the film “lady in the water” http://ladyinthewater.warnerbros.com/ i’m looking forward to this reading! anyone else planning on going?

I will be attending this reading as well, Ashima. I have been a fan of Sarita Choudhury ever since “Mississippi Masala”, and also saw her in the plays “Roar” and “Sakharam Binder”. And I am also a big Debargo Sanyal fan–I first read about him in the New York Times review of a play he did a few weeks ago, called “Women of Trachis”, and decided to check out the show. http://theater2.nytimes.com/2007/01/24/theater/reviews/24trac.html?ex=1170306000&en=446abbed443784c8&ei=5070 This should be a good reading. I’m not familiar with Anuvab Pal, but his work sounds smart and fun.

sarita Chowdury is really hot! did anyone see her in “Kama sutra–a tale of Love”? she’s beautiful. does anyone know if she’s single?

I agree–Sarita Choudhury is one sexy woman, no doubt about it. I just looked up this Debargo Sanyel guy on IMDB and noticed that he has a bunch of new movies coming out soon. I’ve never heard of him before, but it looks like he’s an actor on-the-rise. I can’t come to this reading, unfortunately, but hopefully there will be future readings or productions of this play. I actually didn’t even know that there are Indian playwrights out there, haha. It’s great to see desis doing stuff other than just medicine, IT, business, etc…

Shoot! I missed this. I should read ultrabrown more often. Debargo is great.

I went to this play reading several weeks ago to see Sarita Choudhury. She is just as beautiful in person as she is on the movie screen! I hope when I am 40 years old, I look just as stunning as she does now ;-0 She was great in “Lady in the Water”. I love her! And this Debargo Sanyal dude basically stole the show. He’s super funny, and cute! ;-))) I just did a Google search on them to see what they are up to now. Sarita is in a new short film called “Lady in A Box”: http://www.brain-on-fire.com/lady/ . You can see her in the trailer for it (she is playing an attorney, I think) on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_cRlsd_osu0 . Debargo Sanyal is in a sleek-looking new movie called “West 32nd” (starring the dude who played ‘Harold’ in “Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle”): http://www.w32nd.com . You can see Debargo (as a character named ‘Raj’, according to IMDB) briefly in the trailer (toasting in a bar, with ‘Harold’): http://video.xanga.com/Mike2Cents/b52d3292633/video.html It looks like the film will be part of Tribeca Film Festival in a few weeks. I’m going to try and see it. I saw the awesome Indian-American film “Punching at the Sun” at Tribeca Film Festival last year, and that was a GREAT movie!

Thanks for the heads up, Safiya, about the film “West 32nd” with Debargo Sanyal. I saw him in the 7-11 plays a couple years back and he stole the show. He’s a talented actor. I’m going to try and catch this film at Tribeca Film Fest. And, like every other man who has posted a comment here, I too am crushing on the very sexy Sarita Choudhury. I missed this reading, and have yet to meet her in person though.

Sarita Choudhury is 40 years old?! Wow. She looks great. I really liked her in the movie “Lady in the Water” last summer.

Debargo Sanyal and Sarita Choudhury were terrific in this reading four months ago. I happened to see them both again at last night’s NYC red-carpet premiere of the new film “A Mighty Heart” (starring Angelina Jolie & Archie Panjabi of “Bend It Like Beckham” & Irrfan Khan of “The Namesake”, and produced by Brad Pitt, and filmed/set in Pakistan) where I was working as a writer. I also spotted Debargo Sanyal as a very funny outsourced-from-India singing telegram guy in a short film by Shalini Kantayya in the new FOX reality tv series “On The Lot” a few weeks ago. Shalini is still in the competition, as a matter of fact, where she is one of the final 14 contestants (out of over 12,000 submissions).

Sarita Choudhury is currently getting rave reviews for her performance as Frida Kahlo in the new play THE RISE OF DOROTHY HALE http://www.dorothyhale.com And Debargo Sanyal will soon be seen in the splashy new Off-Broadway musical QUEENS BOULEVARD http://www.signaturetheatre.org/onstage.htm I am a fan of both of actors, and look forward to seeing both of these shows!
