The return of magical thinking

A Calcutta university plans to offer a course on magick:

Well-known magician P C Sorcar’s company Indrajaal, has tied up with Rabindra Bharati University in Kolkata to offer what is being regarded as the first-ever course on magic being delivered under an UGC-registered university…

The aim behind institutionalising magic is to eliminate superstitions and make people think rationally.” [Link]

This in a country where swamis appear daily on the ToI’s editorial page and even Christians decorate ornate roadside crosses in cyan and blue stripes.

The university already has a course on magical thinking. It’s called poli sci: woo minorities with free spots at the IITs, tell the system to double its intake before the next election and provide zero additional funding.

See? Magic!
