As a part of the promo tour, Rushdie came to Vassar today. At one point during his talk, he said that his parents stayed back in Bombay when the Partition happened because they thought of themselves as “Indians first and Muslims second.” Then, much more interestingly, he added, “Well, my father thought of himself as a Muslim seventy-second. He thought of himself as a whiskey-drinker much before he thought of himself as a Muslim. So, golf and whiskey won over religion.”
