Tiffin Wallah

Tiffin Wallah in Curry Hill, with walls made for blind giants, serves a Pondi masala dosa to die for. It’s full of thin-sliced red onions along with the usual masala filling, cut into rectangular ribbons angled carefully on a long sushi plate. A Malayali friend thought his dosa was on tbe bland side, but mine was great — crisp, warmly spiced and not too oily. He also grumbled that Northies never call it ‘dosha,’ as we should.

This was yet another rec from a friend with great taste. I’ll have to work this one off with hard labor Maine Pyar Kiya-style or by sniffing out another gem through Chowhound.

Is this a new eatery? Great dosai and they supply tiffins? Excellent! He he, and the 2-in-1 is cool!

And stop torturing everyone with descriptions like crispy, spicy etc :-D.

I’ve eaten here several times and I like it a lot. I also love the cool coffee mugs.

Dosa is pronounced differently all over the south. ‘Dosa’ is just fine - that’s how the Kannadigas say it.

    Ha ha.

As a Malayali raised in Tamilnadu, I feel uniquely equipped to resolve the dispute.

It’s only malayalis who call it “Dosha”. Everywhere else they say Dosa[i] (actually “though-sy”). And since I’ve never had a good dosa in Kerala (Appams; yes, dosas; no), I declare that my expert dosai-making tamil brethren can decide what it’s called and how it’s pronounced.

i was completely blazed and slightly hung over saturday morning and ate here.

the ravi masala dosa with gunpowder and that other spice.

    yup.. fucking mindblowing.

i could eat that everyday if ulcers and heartburn were nonexistent

tamilians usually pronounce it dosai (tho-sayy), while telugus pronounce it as dosa. one of my gujarati friends insists on call it dhosa (’dh’ as in ‘dhai’)

    the ravi masala dosa

zaz, please don’t tell me that you got a guy named ravi with your dosai :)

i’ve heard really mixed reviews on this place and usually go to my standby, pongal. anybody (and i mean mostly south indians - i’m a real food snob when it comes to these things) recommend a good place in curry hil (besides saravana’s)? curry hill is so close to work and on a slow day, it’s nice to fit in a dosa, or even just a madras coffee…
