Two views on azaan

From Turbanhead’s post on the Pakistani horror movie Zibahkhana:An inhuman sound

“As a kid, there were two things that terrified me. Women in burqas and–” Khan pauses, “the call to prayer over the loudspeakers. It’s such an inhuman sound. But you can’t write that down. I have to live here you know.” He reconsiders. “On the other hand a fatwa against me would guarantee a sellout crowd.” [Link]

From Barack Obama:One of the prettiest sounds on Earth

Mr. Obama recalled the opening lines of the Arabic call to prayer, reciting them with a first-rate accent. In a remark that seemed delightfully uncalculated (it’ll give Alabama voters heart attacks), Mr. Obama described the call to prayer as ”one of the prettiest sounds on Earth at sunset.” [Link]

Listen to a Turkish azaan and a Southall kirtan.

Manish, I checked out both the azaan and the kirtan, and they are both delightful. Thanks for linking them.

On how the azaan in ‘Aliens’ sounds - middle eastern or south asian - I’d say that’s a minor point.
