Vinay Chakravarthy has passed away

SAJA is reporting that bone marrow drive inspiration Vinay Chakravarthy passed away today at 29. I didn’t know him well but went to college with his brother Bharath, who’s a sweetheart. Here’s a three-minute interview with Vinay on how he found out he had leukemia.

Both Vinay and Sameer Bhatia found bone marrow donors through unprecedented nationwide drives and gave other South Asians a chance at survival. The dimensions of their gift will only be revealed as we hear of others who match on the registry — and, hopefully, beat the odds:

Survival rates were highest (33 percent) for those bone marrow transplants with matched unrelated donors. Survival rates were the same (22 percent) for cord blood and one antigen-mismatched unrelated bone marrow transplant patients… [Link]

Ironically, Vinay was in his medical residency when his symptoms emerged. My thoughts are with Bharath, Rashmi and their entire family.

May waheguru bless his soul, and give strength to his lovely wife. I do hope his passing serves as a reminder to all of us to send swabs in for yet undiscovered cases. I know my family did when we first heard about Vinay, but thanks Manish for posting the info again, as it’ll make a great cut & paste email to forward on and encourage people to donate.
