Webb exit poll oddities

From the CNN exit poll on the Webb vs. Allen race:
-
Like most Dems, Webb’s support is U-shaped by income, education and urbanness — the most and least wealthy, educated and urban supported Webb, while the middle supported Allen.
-
When voters made up their minds is also U-shaped. Those who decided well before Macacagate broke, the hardcore partisans, and those who decided only the day of the poll, the conflicted Republicans who eventually came home, both went for Allen.
-
Webb won big among independents while peeling away very few Republicans. 93% of Republicans voted for Allen despite his history of racism because it didn’t personally affect them.
-
Military veterans went for Allen, prioritizing party over combat experience. The ‘band of brothers’ meant little.
-
Ethnic and religious minorities overwhelmingly went for Webb, prioritizing basic civility and personal respect over other issues.
-
Blacks went for Webb even more than Asians, despite the macaca comment being aimed at a desi.
-
Surprisingly, Webb won rural southeastern Virginia, likely because of his ancestral ties to the region.
-
The testosterone shift towards Webb the ex-Marine did not manifest itself in the exit polls. He ran ahead with women and behind with men, like many Dems.
-
Webb did better than Allen with voters under 30.
-
As usual, evangelicals and frequent church-goers went for the Republican.
-
As expected, those who called the Iraq war an important issue voted for the Democrat. But Allen won most of the other issues categories polled: terrorism, economy, values, taxes, illegal immigration. That’s likely because Webb is less well-known than Allen.
