In India “Desi” is not a desirable title. “Desi” means rural, not cool and un-educated or some one who doesnt know a lot about the world.
Similar words (for females) are “behen-ji” in North and “Kaku-bai” in Maharashtra.
This is because everyone is “Desi” in India, so they dont need a title, unlike in the US.
“desi” (when used in India) usually means someone who is unsophisticated, crude or cheap.
It is used in a different contexts ….but the meaning is usually quite clear and there is very little chance of misunderstanding.
